This live, daily 15-minute black and white children’s program followed the adventures of the Atom Squad, a secret government organisation designed to combat cosmic invaders and safeguard American atomic secrets.
The Atom Squad was headed by scientists Steve Elliot and Dave Fielding (Bob Courtleigh and Bob Hastings) who defended America from Commies, mad doctors and extraterrestrials from their secret operational base in New York City.
Their chief was played by Bram Nossem.
The series aired at the height of the McCarthy era and its Communist witch hunts, running on NBC from 6 July 1953 to 22 January 1954.
The political climate of the time was reflected in episodes such as ‘Five Steps to The Kremlin’.
