Michael Denison featured as Britain’s answer to Perry Mason, suave and elegant barrister Richard Boyd QC, in ITV’s first courtroom drama.
The show so accurately portrayed the many facets of British justice that Michael Dennison received invitations to address Law Society dinners, and a real Queens Counsel said that any young man wanting a career at the bar could do no better than to model himself on Boyd QC.
Ably supported by his clerk, Jack (who also acted as narrator), Boyd prosecuted at times, but usually defended, generally turning up the right result.
Created and written by Jack Roffey (a real-life assize court official) and filmed in semi-documentary style, the series was one of the first programmes to explore the world of the British judiciary, becoming a major hit, particularly towards the end of its long run.
