City Hospital began life in October 1951 as a Saturday-morning series on the CBS radio network, with Santos Ortega playing the role of the hospital’s medical director, Dr Barton Crane.
The show also debuted on CBS television in November as a bi-weekly evening series – alternating with Crime Syndicated – with Melville Ruick now in the role of Dr Barton Crane (while Ortega continued to play the role on the radio version).
Dr Crane was assisted by Dr Kate Morrow (Anne Burr).
The TV series ended in 1953, but Ruick continued to play the role on the radio on and off until 1959.
Melville Ruick died in Los Angeles on 24 December 1972, aged 74.
