In 18th-century France, Edmond Dantès had been wrongly convicted of crimes against the state and falsely imprisoned in the infamous Château d’If in the Mediterranean.
There, a dying prisoner told him of the treasure to be found on the island of Monte Cristo and Dantès broke free to take it for his own, setting himself up as a nobleman with the proceeds.
The original story came from the novel of the same name by Alexandre Dumas, although the TV series expanded on Dante’s swashbuckling adventures, making the Frenchman a kind of Robin Hood battling for fairness and justice for all, and travelling all around Europe.
George Dolenz (father of Micky Dolenz of The Monkees) starred as Dantès.
