Socorro County, New Mexico, during the late 1800s, is the setting for a series about Elfego Baca, a colourful Spanish-American lawman and lawyer, who battles for justice.
The ten-part series, dramatising the charmed life of the real Don Elfego – one of the most incredible figures in frontier history – was broadcast as part of Walt Disney Presents on ABC and aired between 3 October 1958 to 25 March 1960 (with four episodes in 1958, four in 1959, and a final two in 1960).
The real Elfego Barca died in 1945.
A one-time friend of Billy the Kid and foe of Pancho Villa, he managed to escape unharmed from dozens of six-shooter encounters, most notably when he fought a 33-hour gun duel all alone against 80 Texas cowboys. He killed four and wounded eight.
Robert Loggia died in 2015, aged 85.
