Airing on Saturdays in January and February 1959, this six-part BBC children’s serial was based on the French book Le Chevalier Pierrot by Gil Buhet and adapted by Antonia Ridge and Adrian Thomas.
It concerned the adventures of six boys, aged about fourteen, who are sons of the leading citizens of Casteilcorbon – a (fictional) village on the slopes of the Pyrenees.
Wrongly accused of stealing honey from one of the hives belonging to the village schoolmaster and angered by a sense of injustice, the boys lock themselves in the moated medieval fortress of Bastide on the outskirts of the village.
They draw up the Bastide’s drawbridge, hoist a red flag, and the siege begins, with the boys refusing to come out until the injustice has been righted.
