Mr Pastry, the slapstick character complete with walrus moustache and flapping coattails, was the popular creation of actor-acrobat-dancer Richard Hearne and was a great success for many years with young viewers.
Hearne’s character was a staple on post-war British telly and a big hit with general audiences on ATV’s Sunday Night at the London Palladium – he even made guest appearances on the huge American variety series The Ed Sullivan Show for CBS.
His later children’s TV series included Leave It To Mr Pastry (1960), Ask Mr Pastry (1961) and Mr Pastry’s Pet Shop (1962).
Both Hearne and Mr Pastry seem now largely forgotten by modern audiences, due largely to the majority of his output being wiped over the years.
