This CBS primetime series was a tribute to the often-overlooked work that nurses perform in large hospitals and followed the personal and professional lives of Liz Thorpe and Gail Lucas, dedicated nurses working at Alden General Hospital in New York City.
Liz (Shirl Conway) was the older, wise, and more experienced nurse; Gail (Zina Bethune) was the younger, fresh-out-of-nursing-school assistant who was being mentored by Liz.
For 30 episodes between 22 September 1964 to 7 September 1965, the title changed to The Doctors and the Nurses and focused also on the lives and experiences of doctors Alex Tazinski (Michael Tolan) and Ted Steffen (Joseph Campanella).
A daytime serial version was then produced between 27 September 1965 and 31 March 1967 with a new cast. Mary Fickett took over the role of Nurse Liz Thorpe and Melinda Plank as Nurse Gail Lucas.
