This early Californian children’s television puppet show was sponsored by Nesbitt’s Orange.
Debuting on KNXT on 10 May 1952, the series revolved around a little boy named Ricky who had no family and lived by himself on the outskirts of Middleton, USA.
His friend was Michael Timothy Mulligan – a conductor and motorman on a trolley car for 25 years – who has “adopted” an old retired trolley car with magical powers. On it, he took Ricky to far-away places around the world each Saturday and Sunday.
They were accompanied on their travels by The Glonk – a half fish-half bird who was thousands of years old.
The series moved to KECA-TV on 23 June, where it was broadcast five days a week.
The puppets were created by Shafton’s Puppets, directed by puppeteers Jack and Jackie Shafton.
