NBC’s Royal Showcase – a testing ground for new comedians broadcast live from New York City – was originally hosted by George Abbott before funnyman Jack Carson took over as MC in April 1952.

Each show featured an established comic and an unknown one, along with a high-profile singing star.

Guests included Rosemary Clooney, Milton Berle, Perry Como, Guy Mitchell, Louis Armstrong, Frankie Laine, Peggy Lee, Harpo Marx, Jeanette MacDonald and Kukla, Fran and Ollie.
