19 x 30 minute episodes
Stanley Peck (Buddy Hackett) was an affable newsstand operator in the lobby of the upscale Sussex-Fenton hotel in Manhattan, New York.
His extroverted personality attracted hotel residents and tourists alike, involving him in their lives.
Two people unhappy with this were his girl Celia Howard (Carol Burnett in her first TV series appearance) and Mr Phillips (Frederic Tozere), the hotel manager.
While Stanley was busy trying to do the right thing he somehow managed to get into some awful predicaments.
Heard but not seen was Paul Lynde, snarling sarcastic comments down the hotel’s tannoy system as Horace Fenton, the unseen owner of the hotel chain.
The short-lived NBC sitcom was broadcast live to air at 8:30 pm on Monday nights from 24 September 1956 to 11 March 1957. Sponsors included Pall Mall Cigarettes, Pamper Home Permanents and Deep Magic Lotion.
All episodes were directed by David Brown while the most notable writers were two gentlemen who would go on to much bigger and better things – Woody Allen and Neil Simon.
