1 9 5 3 – 1 9 5 5 (UK)
60 minute episodes
This BBC magazine-style show for the under-21s debuted on 9 October 1953 and was originally broadcast fortnightly on Friday evenings but later moved to a monthly telecast.
Each show – presented from a top floor overlooking the city with teenage boys and girls sitting at small tables in alcoves near wide curved windows – lasted an hour and contained six or seven separate items ranging from advice on careers to musical jam sessions.
All the segments (except an “Explain This” spot with Valentine Dyall) featured youngsters from different parts of the country.
The set had a soda fountain on one side and a rostrum for an eight-piece band on the other, with floorspace for dancing in the middle.
Hosts included crooner/comedian Benny Lee, 18-year-old Jean Aubrey, Barry Macgregor and veteran commentator Max Robertson, whose cold, efficient technique was more suited to Panorama than hosting a show for youngsters.
