Wealthy estate agent Geoffrey Stewart (Noel Johnson) is shot and killed by his wife Diana (Sylvia Syms) in league with her lover Mark Paxton (John Thaw) but their plans go wildly astray when the body disappears before they can dispose of it.
Diana shortly receives a telephone call from her husband, asking her to meet him at a local hotel – alone – or he will telephone the police and have her arrested for attempted murder.
Mark is shocked to receive a call from Geoffrey’s shopkeeper mistress, Kitty Tracey (Patsy Smart) later that evening explaining that Diana has been arrested at the hotel after the police found Geoffrey’s body – dead on this occasion.
Diana is later released due to insufficient evidence, and she and Mark believe they are in the clear.
But another interested party knows precisely what transpired on that fateful night, and has blackmail on their mind.
Further murders and other mysterious events follow as the unflappable Inspector Clay (Dudley Foster) heads up the police investigation.
The five-part BBC series was filmed around Chichester and written by Francis Durbridge.
