This short series from Granada TV presented two Jacobean plays by 17th-century English dramatist Thomas Middleton.
The first, ‘The Changeling’ (which aired on 4 January 1965), was set in Alicante in Spain. Beatrice (Markham) is betrothed to be married, but – although outwardly innocent – there is murder in her heart.
She arranges to have her fiance, Alonzo (Eric Lander), killed so that she can marry for love. But Beatrice misjudged the man who wields the rapier – De Flores (Godfrey). For only when she is free of her fiance does she realise the extent to which she is now in the power of De Flores.
Esmond Knight played Beatrice’s father, Vermandero. Derek Bennett directed.
The second production, ‘Women Beware Women’ (which was broadcast on 11 January 1965), starred Gene Anderson, Diana Rigg and Clifford Evans as a group of wealthy idle pleasure-seekers whose lives erupted in murder and suicide in Florence in 1620.
Gordon Flemyng was the director.
