It’s Dark Outside

1 9 6 4 (UK)
16 x 55 minute episodes

This spin-off from The Odd Man (1962) starred William Mervyn as the acerbic Inspector Rose.

Rose and the soft-hearted pensive Detective Sgt Swift (Keith Barron) were joined by Anthony (John Carson) and Alice (June Toblin) Brand, a barrister and his journalist wife, though not for long.

By the second season of the Granada series the Brands and Swift were gone, leaving the calm, cold Rose in prime position, supported by newcomers DS Hunter (Anthony Ainley), his girlfriend, Claire (Veronica Strong) and her boozy reporter friend, Fred Blaine (John Stratton).

A young actor named Oliver Reed appeared in some episodes as Sebastian, the ringleader of a bunch of tearaways.

The programme gained a cult following for its grim, tense, almost film noir atmosphere and it also generated #1 song with Jackie Trent’s Where Are You Now? theme.

A further spin-off, Mr Rose, followed in 1968.
