William Lucas starred as Detective Inspector Mitchell in this six-part BBC thriller serial which was written by Ted Willis (author of Dixon of Dock Green) and Edward J. Mason (the writer of radio’s The Archers).
The series opened with Mitchell investigating a case very close to home – the kidnapping of his young son, Ken.
While he investigated the disappearance of his son (which lead him to a Cockney gang and a ruthless crime boss, intent on using his son as a bargaining chip to ensure Mitchell’s silence and complicity), viewers were drawn into the impact on the Detective Inspector’s family, particularly his wife, Ann (Betty McDowell).
The series aired at 9.25 pm on Wednesday nights.
