This police forensic series (one of the first BBC2 drama series to be made in colour) was set in the West Midlands and Warwickshire area and blended medical drama and traditional police work.
Marius Goring (formerly television’s Scarlet Pimpernel) played the slightly prickly Dr John Hardy, a Home Office pathologist and modern-day Sherlock Holmes.
Ann Morrish was Hardy’s younger wife (a practising GP with a more friendly bedside manner than her irascible husband), Victor Winding played Detective Chief Inspector Fleming and Valerie Murray was Goring’s affable assistant Sandra Hughes.
The BBC appointed a technical advisor, Professor John Glaister, a former professor of forensic medicine and public health at the University of Glasgow, to ensure The Expert maintained a high level of authenticity.
The forensic pathologist, writer and barrister Bernard Knight (best known for recovering all twelve bodies in the Fred West case in Gloucester in 1994) contributed several storylines, as well as penning a tie-in novel.
