Foo Foo was an engaging and optimistic little tramp in a Chaplinesque bowler hat who had a middle-aged girlfriend called Mimi. He also had a rival for her affections, a villainous bully called GoGo.
The cartoons were produced by Halas and Batchelor Cartoon Films for ABC Television in Britain. The series was also the first British animated series to be sold to America.
John Halas was a Hungarian émigré to the UK and he and Joy had worked on war information and propaganda films in the 1940s.
After the war, they continued making short films and producing animated series including Foo Foo (1959–60), Popeye the Sailor (1960–62), DoDo, The Kid from Outer Space (1965–70) and The Lone Ranger (1966–69).
They also brought George Orwell’s Animal Farm to life in 1954.
