ABC produced these four revamped stories of religion for ITV with a big-name cast. The first play in the series had a seedy-looming Judas Iscariot (Roy Dotrice, pictured above) in a royal blue lounge suit and horn-rimmed spectacles crawling gingerly through a minefield on a suicidal search for Christ.
As he grovelled in the sand and slithered under barbed wire barriers on his belly, he fumed, “He led me on . . . used me . . . connived the whole thing. The long-awaited saviour that had to suffer, betrayed and killed. He should beg my forgiveness!”
Other biblical characters updated and “re-analysed” were Mary Magdalene (Hannah Gordon), St Paul (Vernon Dobtcheff) and St Francis (Cyril Cusack).
The plays were directed by Polish director, Voytek.
