This television adaptation of the Academy Award-winning film starred Gene Kelly as Father Chuck O’Malley, a young priest sent to the slums of New York’s St. Dominic’s Parish.
There was an instantaneous clash of progressive and conservative ideology as O’Malley attempted to be patient and understanding with the very staid and stubborn Father Fitzgibbon (Leo G. Carroll).
Nydia Westman played Mrs Featherstone, the housekeeper at the rectory, and a young Dick York portrayed Tom Colwell, who was in charge of the wayward “Boys Club” at the parish’s community centre.
Also, appearing frequently was Regis Toomey as J.W.Dawson, director of the Boys Club.
Having Kelly in the cast assisted in getting many big name guest stars, such as Harry Morgan, George Kennedy, Anne Francis, Jack Warden, Cloris Leach, Billy Mumy and Ray Walston.
Kelly borrowed from his own father’s Irish speech patterns for the role.
Sponsors included The American Tobacco Company, Breck Shampoo, and Miles Laboratories.
