Athol Guy, the leader of The Seekers (recently disbanded), tried his hand at television, hosting this weekly one-hour national variety show from Australia’s Channel 7, which was advertised as “A swinging show – but not way-out”.
Produced by HSV-7 in Melbourne and premiering on Friday 30 August 1968, the show featured a regular cast including vocalist Pat Carroll, New Zealand singing duo Bill and Boyd, actor Terry Norris, actress Kym Parry, the Joe Latona Dancers and an 18-piece orchestra.
Guests included The Monkees, Spike Milligan, Rod Taylor, Tommy Trinder, Tommy Leonetti and Athol’s former Seekers associate Bruce Woodley.
The show started well but quickly dropped in the ratings. A rescue attempt in October saw British writers Eric Green and John Muir flown down under to try and breathe some fresh life into the show.
A decision to switch production from HSV-7 in Melbourne to ATN-7 in Sydney at the end of 1968 did not come to fruition, and the show was scrapped in the new year.
