This weekly family-entertainment variety programme from NZBC was created as a mild-mannered replacement for C’mon and was intended to bridge the generation gap.
Instead of psychedelic go-go dancers and screaming crowds, Happen Inn featured a stylised “inn” set where resident vocalists and guest musicians performed the latest chart-topping hits and pop standards.
The core group featured notable New Zealand entertainers, including Ray Woolf, Chic Littlewood, Vaughan Laurence, Lyndsay Bremner, Sally Rogan, and Anita Skudder.
Hosted by radio DJ Peter Sinclair (the former host of Let’s Go and C’mon), the series – one of the last major New Zealand music series produced in black-and-white – provided an important platform for showcasing homegrown Kiwi musical talent.
A young Rob Guest began his musical journey as a pop singer on the show before moving across the Tasman to become one of Australasia’s greatest musical theatre icons.
