Richard Llewellyn’s famous novel was brought to television as an eight-part serial by producer Dafyyd Gruffydd and broadcast from the BBC’s Welsh Television Studios.
Barry Thomas adapted the epic story chronicling the fortunes of the Morgan family in a small Welsh mining valley at the turn of the 20th century from the last decade of Victoria’s reign until just before the First World War.
Playing the Morgan family were Eynon Evans (the father), Glyn Houston (the eldest son), Islwyn Maelor Evans (youngest son), Rachel Thomas (the mother) and Sulwen Morgan (the daughter).
The production was designed by Alan Taylor.
BBC TV produced a new version in 1975 starring Stanley Baker as the father and Sian Phillips as the mother.
