King Rupert X (Robert Morley who also wrote the scripts) is the ruler of the Mediterranean Kingdom of Grabnia.
Grabnia, like the king, is roughly pear-shaped. Unlike the king, it occupies about 870 square miles. It is claimed to be a tourist’s paradise but it has no museums, no art galleries, no ancient architecture and no historical ruins.
All important affairs – like parting tourists from their money – are conducted in English.
King Rupert’s daughter, Princess Amelia (Tracey Reed) is something of a beatnik, who prefers to wear paint-splattered jeans and a sweater rather than a dress and a tiara.
The ATV series debuted on Saturday 29 April 1961.
