13 x 55 minute episodes
This anthology of one-hour Saturday night plays from ABC told a different story each week but always in the same setting – the British charter liner, Jezebel, at sea.
Regulars on the Jezebel included the Captain (Ernest Hear), Chief Officer Steve Rettar (Alan Browning), Lawton the Purser (Emrys Jones), Assistant Purser Carr (Cavan Kendall) and Pomeroy the barman (Patrick Bedford).
Each week, guest stars portrayed the leading characters. In the first episode, “Sea of Doubt”, DJ Pete Murray starred as Larry Scott, a husband suspected by his wife, Maxine (Heather Sears), of murdering a child in Sydney.
The stories ranged from lovers tiffs through to racism, four-legged stowaways and missing nuclear warheads (!)
Guest stars throughout the series included Jane Asher (pictured above right), Leonard Rossiter, Geoffrey Palmer, Hugh Paddick, Richard O’Sullivan, Bill Nagy, Maurice Denham, Ernest Clark, and Amanda Barrie.
