26 x 30 minute episodes
George Salverson created this CBC series – which premiered on 23 September 1969 – revolved around fast-talking, trouble-shooting newspaperman McQueen (former Wojeck costar Ted Follows), who wrote a daily column called “The Actioneer”, which tried to help people with their problems.
Episodes dealt with a range of subject matter, from the operations of con men to injustice in areas like education, immigration and plain old human relations.
McQueen was an unconventional hero – frustrated by red tape and crushed by authority – and his methods were often questionable but effective – although he lost as often as he won.
He was helped in his endeavours by attractive mini-skirted assistants Natasha (Jan Goldin) and Denise (Daphne Gibson).
The first 13 episodes were filmed at the Toronto Telegram. A permanent newspaper office set was eventually built at CBC’s Sumach Street headquarters in Toronto.
Ted Fellows died in Ontario on 21 October 2016, aged 89.
