This was the story of Lieutenant Douglas Roberts (Roger Smith) and his quest for more participation in the war effort during World War II.

He was bored aboard the Pacific-based cargo ship USS Reluctant (nicknamed “the bucket”) and wrote many letters requesting reassignment to active duty elsewhere.

Those letters, though, were never delivered because they were intercepted by his commanding officer, Captain John C. Morton (Richard X. Slattery).

Morton was not one to bend the rules even slightly, but the shenanigans of the men aboard his ship threatened his sanity-especially those of one Ensign Frank Pulver (Steve Harmon).

Pulver wanted to spice things up aboard this less-than-exciting vessel (as long as no real work was involved, of course). Also on board were George Ives as Doc; John McCook as Stefanowski; Dennis Robertson as “Cookie” Pike; and Henry Gibson as Insignia.
