This Rediffusion comedy series was written by Dick Clement and Ian la Frenais especially for Harry H Corbett who starred in the title role as “Mr Aitch” – the owner of half an old house on a bombed site in the centre of London. The site was worth a fortune but Mr Aitch made £40 a week from it as a car park.
He had big dreams and wanted status and “lots of birds” so he would mortgage the site, borrow against it, dangle it in front of people . . . but he wouldn’t let it go.
Mr Aitch was one of the new breed – a man of the 1970s – trendy, classless and switched-on. But while he poured champagne on his cornflakes, he still ate his kippers with his fingers.
When his valet-cum-chauffeur, Albie (Norman Chappell) resigned, Mr Aitch interviewed potential au pairs while lounging sumptuously in his bed like he was judging a beauty contest.
