This unique and innovative mix of live-action and animation from Hanna-Barbera originally aired in primetime on NBC on Sunday evenings during the 1968-69 TV season at 7.00 PM as a lead-in for The Wonderful World of Disney.
Huck Finn (Michael Shea), Tom Sawyer (Kevin Schultz) and Becky Thatcher (Lu Ann Haslam) had been chased into an animated world by Injun Joe (voiced by Ted Cassidy, Lurch of Addams Family fame) and were now trying to get back to their own world in 19th-century Missouri, travelling through time and location for adventures in ancient Greece, the South Seas, China, India, Europe, the Arctic and beyond.
Injun Joe always showed up in a fresh guise – mad scientist, wicked king, evil sorcerer etc – but always as their villainous nemesis.
Episodes later resurfaced in the syndicated series The Banana Splits and Friends, and were aired in the UK in 1970.
