Debuting on 6 December 1968, Terry-Thomas starred in this BBC comedy series – a spin-off from a 1967 Comedy Playhouse episode – as James Franklin-Jones, better known to his colleagues as “FJ”.
FJ was a high-powered salesman who travelled the world for his firm, Balsoms Plastics. However, his primary interest in life was in ‘crumpet’ – not plastics.
It was a pursuit he followed with military precision, using, as ammunition, an arsenal of chat-up lines, invented pasts and cunning tricks.
Peter Clancy (Jonathan Cecil) was FJ’s young trainee assistant who found that the experience he picked up on foreign trips wasn’t confined to business.
