Set in 1960 in Paris, the BBC production team actually ventured no further than Chelsea for its location shoots, going to great lengths to create a French street scene. Cars drove on the other side of the road, street signs were provided by the design department, and a coiffured poodle was a key prop.

The action concerned Dennis (Jonathan Bergman) and Susan (Hilary Wyce) Harper, two conspicuously middle-class English children residing in a Paris hotel with their tutor, Mr Ash (Eric Dodson).

One rainy day, stuck in the hotel, the Harper children are looking down the back of an armchair for a few loose francs when they discover a pen instead.

Their discovery causes a ruckus among the rather oddball collection of residents and staff in the hotel, including Perichon (Michael Hitchman) a bumbling hotel detective, and Madame Blitskaya (Nicolette Bernard), an over-the-top prima donna.

Dennis and Susan’s adventures also involve their old friend Miss Merrell (Joan Hart), a puppet collector, and her “friend”, Mr Jinks – a huge toy rabbit.
