32 x 30 minute episodes
After 20 years of life on the road, entertainers Peter and Mary Lindsey (real-life married couple Peter Lind Hayes and Mary Healy) decide to leave the excitement of New York City for suburban Oakdale, Connecticut.
At 130 Maple Street, Mary involves herself with the children Leslie (Merry Martin) and Stevie (Gil Smith) – assisted by longtime live-in housekeeper Wilma (Bea Benaderet), who refers to Peter as “Squire Lindsey” – and the series charts their misadventures.
Mary is now a member of the PTA, the Garden Club and the Book Club.
Peter, who still has show business in his blood, performs occasionally at the Imperial Room in Manhattan but prefers “the living room circuit” – performing for their friends when Mary gives a party, which she does on a weekly basis.
Peter is also president of the Keep Oakdale Beautiful Committee and chairman of the board of the High School Project to finance the building of the community’s first high school.
A variety of recurring characters were established during the first season. Howard Smith made several appearances as Mary’s father Horace Gibney, owner of a plastics manufacturing company, while Peter’s agent Lou (Herb Ellis) was seen as well.
Seasoned radio actress Betty Garde made a few appearances as Gladys, the sour maid next door who was Wilma’s friend.
Peter Loves Mary aired on Wednesdays at 10.00 pm on NBC. The single-season sitcom was first broadcast on 12 October 1960 and last aired on 31 May 1961.
