This was the story of Rango (Tim Conway) – a clumsy, bumbling, inept Texas Ranger who somehow still managed to come out on top at the end of each episode. Even though it was rarely mentioned, his full name was Rango Starr – an obvious parody of The Beatles‘ legendary drummer.
Rango’s father was head of the Texas Rangers and placed his son at the Deep Wells Ranger Station (Company “B”) because it was a quiet post and he thought Rango wouldn’t cause much trouble there. He thought wrong.
Rango’s harried commanding officer, Captain Horton (Norman Alden), tried to keep Rango out of the crime-solving loop, but somehow he always got wind of the goings-on and fouled things up until some lucky turn of events near the end went his way.
Rango’s partner in crime-solving was a cowardly Native American scout named Pink Cloud (Guy Marks), who much preferred the white man’s world to his own.
This sitcom replaced the cancelled Hondo at 9.00 pm on Friday nights on ABC and was sold to the network without a pilot. Sponsors included Crest toothpaste and Alka-Seltzer.
