During World War II, Robert North (William Dexter), a brave English officer, captured the affection of the little village of San Filippo in western Sicily by performing a somewhat fortuitous act of heroism involving the capture of a large number of German soldiers.
Now North has returned, cautious and middle-aged, for a holiday in Sicily.
But he finds it a very different place from the country he knew during the war. Then the Mafia were extremely useful to the Allies, but now in peacetime, they constitute a purely destructive and oppressive force in Sicilian life.
There has already been one brutal Mafia murder since North’s arrival, and soon he and his old friends Lili (Maggie Fitzgibbon), Luigi (Michael Balfour) and Antonio (Carl Bernard) – who is now the mayor of San Filippo – find themselves involved with the bandits.
The production design for the series was by future Alien and Blade Runner director Ridley Scott.
