The Rolf Harris Show screened on Saturday nights, with Rolf joined each week by The Young Generation, who danced about.
Harris was already well known for hit records like Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport and Sun Arise, but his painting talent would come to the fore in the series.
He would produce a giant painting live on air during each show.
Thus it was that a whole generation spent their Saturday teatimes watching a bearded Australian gent humming to himself and daubing a huge canvas with a thick brush, occasionally breaking off to ask the audience, “Can you see what it is yet?”
Rolf Harris went on to Rolf’s Cartoon Club (1989-1990) and in later years, Animal Hospital (1994-2001).
In June 2014, Harris was charged and convicted of indecent assault offences and sentenced to nearly six years in prison. He was released in 2017 after serving nearly three years. Following his conviction, he was stripped of many of the honours that he had been awarded during his career.
Harris died on 10 May 2023, aged 93. His death certificate gave the cause of death as neck cancer and “frailty of old age.”
