Much-loved British entertainer, multi-instrumentalist and television presenter Roy Castle was given his own BBC variety show in 1964.
Roy’s guests on the show included Bernard Cribbins, Pat Coombs, Una Stubbs, Kenny Baker, Eric Sykes, Harry Secombe, Jack Douglas, Cilla Black, Val Doonican, Jimmy Edwards, Dick Emery, Françoise Hardy, Anita Harris, Vince Hill, Don Maclean, Spike Milligan, Shirley Bassey, Tony Blackburn, Ronnie Corbett, Jim Dale, Cliff Richard, Bruce Forsyth, Bobbie Gentry, Dickie Henderson, Mary Hopkin and Sid James.
Castle became the host of Record Breakers in 1972, eventually remaining with the programme for over 20 years, until his death on 2 September 1994, aged 62, after a long fight with lung cancer. Castle was a non-smoker and attributed the disease to the years he spent gigging in smoke-filled jazz clubs.
