This BBC2 series stemmed from an idea by writer John Hawkesworth and was based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s non-Sherlock Holmes stories, with the output ranging through many different styles and locales and embodying the author’s interests in boxing, the supernatural and medical matters.
All the stories were centred around a trio of Oxford University undergraduates – elegant Philip Hardacre (Michael Latimer), homely Tom Crabbe (Keith Buckley) and quiet Lee “Monkey” Monkhouse (Christopher Matthews).
Guest stars in the thirteen stories included Billie Whitelaw, Michael Hordern, Charlotte Rampling, Iain Cuthbertson, Richard O’Callaghan, Maurice Denham, Aubrey Morris, Mike Pratt, Jack Wild, Peter Bowles, Norman Rossington, George Sewell, Bryan Pringle, George Layton and Noel Howlett.
