This four-part series of plays from Granada TV presented stories about Queen Victoria (played here by Patricia Routledge) from the play by playwright Laurence Housman, which was first staged at the Lyric Theatre in London in 1937 (it had been banned by the Lord Chamberlain until that year).
The four episodes marked the milestones in Victoria’s reign, starting from when she came to the throne in 1837 and covering her choice of Prince Albert (German actor Joachim Hansen) for consort, marrying him in 1840, and his death of typhoid in 1861.
The final episode dealt with her Diamond Jubilee in 1897.
