    Young Marrieds, The

    1 9 6 4 – 1 9 6 6 (USA)
    382 x 30 minute episodes

This ABC daytime soap opera told the stories of several couples. Episodes depicted their relationships within the family and with their friends in Queen’s Point, in suburban New York.

The most volatile were the bickering Reynolds – former model Ann (Lee Meriwether then Susan Brown) and her commercial artist husband Walter (Michael T. Mikler).

Ann was jealous of Walter’s work with models Jill and Carol and desired more from the world, from money to self-worth. The two began divorce proceedings in June 1965, and Walter started seeing Carol (Susan Seaforth Hayes).

Liz (Floy Dean) and Matt (Scott Graham then Charles Grodin) Stevens had to contend with Liz’s mother, Irene (Irene Hervey and then Constance Moore), interfering in their lives whenever possible. Matt fretted that he owed his job at Forsyth Industries to his mother-in-law’s machinations.

Dr Dan (Paul Picerni) and Susan (Peggy McCay) Garrett were desperately trying to regain custody of Susan’s child, Jerry Karr (Pat Rosson), away from Lena (Norma Connolly) and Roy (Barry Russo) Gilroy.

The Stevenses were written out of the storyline, which then refocused almost solely on the marital problems of the Garretts and the Reynolds.

Others entangled in the melodrama were Jimmy (Ken Metcalf) and Buzz (Les Brown Jr.), who found themselves sentenced for misdeeds to the chagrin of Buzz’s parents, the Kormans; Gillespie (Robert Hogan), a lawyer helping Buzz who ended up romancing Jill; and Aunt Alex (Irene Tedrow).

In the show’s final episode, Walter Reynolds learned that he was going blind and barricaded himself in his home with a shotgun, contemplating suicide. No resolution for this situation was ever presented (although producers had planned for him to be saved by Carol’s devotion and then return to Ann).

The Young Marrieds was devised as a sister soap to General Hospital, which preceded it daily.

Yes, one of the great presenters. R.I.P.

For fans of the radio series Round The Horne (1965 - 1968) - starring the inimitable Kenneth Williams - there are several full episodes on Spotify. Some of the humour is still pretty close to the edge, even by modern standards. Bona!
