This drama series about the famous web-slinger first aired on 5 April 1978 and starred Nicholas Hammond (formerly one of the Von Trapp children in The Sound of Music) as Peter Parker/Spidey.
Photographer Parker, a young college science major and part-time news photographer for theΒ Daily Bugle,Β is accidentally bitten by a radioactive spider and develops super powers.
He could now sense the presence of danger and possessed strengthΒ far superior to that of ordinary men. He could also scale sheer walls without ropes and had a magic web concealed in the wristband that helped him to ‘fly’ and to subdue attackers.
Peter’s boss at theΒ Daily BugleΒ was publisherΒ J Jonah Jameson (Robert F Simon).Β Jameson’sΒ secretary Rita (Chip Fields) was Peter’s good friend and protector.
The series remained true to the comic books andΒ mostly featured Spider-Man dropping out of the air and landing on a car or slowly (very slowly) climbing up the side of a building. The webbing featured giant fishnets being tossed on top of the bad guys.
The final few episodes were screened as specials.Β Three attempts were made to bring the show back between 1977 and 1979, and a made-for-TV movie was even released theatrically in Europe.
Even creator Stan Lee complained publicly about this show.
