After more than 15 years as a lieutenant-colonel in MI5 and DI5, 55-year-old widower Jack Goodall (Robert Urquhart) hung up his spy-catching equipment and happily retired to his richly, heftily furnished seafront flat in Eastbourne.
He found the intelligence game hard to give up, however, especially as he was endowed with a kind of sixth sense – a nose for intrigue which made him invaluable to his former employers (fronted by Millbrook – Head of Section at a British security department).
Goodall smiled a lot in a rather mysterious way and sorted out agents, pacts, negotiations and secrets of all kinds concerning his country’s security, and then returned to his retirement, the music of Elgar and the paintings of Turner – for he was very British, was Mr Goodall – a patriot with a love of everything English.
