This joint Australian/Scottish/West German series told of the hardships and adversities suffered by survivors of a shipwreck on an unnamed Pacific island in the late 1800s.
The sailing ship Mary Jane, bound for Australia with a mixed company of settlers, militia, convicts and crew, goes down in a hurricane.
Castaway was filmed on location near Port Macquarie in New South Wales, Australia. Most episodes were filmed at Miners Beach, Port Macquarie, although the scene where the Mary Jane sinks was staged at Narrabeen on Sydney’s northern beaches.
The cast included three German actors, Fred Haltiner (who played the head of a migrant family), Renate Schroeter and Volker Eckstein. Britain’s contribution was Isobel Black.
Don Barkham, who played a convict called Irving, was a diver on the Great Barrier Reef for two years.
