When Dr Duncan Waring (Robin Nedwell) and Dr Dick Stuart-Clark (Geoffrey Davies) find positions at St. Barnabas Hospital in Sydney, they find that life in an Australian hospital is not much different to life in an English hospital.
Duncan is working under fearsome Professor Beaumont (Frank Wilson) and alongside Australia’s answer to Lawrence Bingham, Junior Registrar Maurice Griffin (John Derum), while Dick is initially unemployed (and hiding from the police) and partying till all hours.
Duncan helps land Dick a job at St Barnabas’ where the pair compete for the affections of physiotherapist Pamela Kincaid (Sally Conabere) while Dick dreams up money-making schemes, including buying shares in a lame racehorse, running a raffle for a trip to Hawaii,
Colleagues at the hospital include Linda Franklin (Jennifer Mellet), Sister Potts (Mary Ann Severne), Sister Fletcher (Deborah Kennedy), Nurse Pettigrew (Lorna Lesley).
Little was seen of Australia outside St.Barnabas and Duncan’s flat (save for the occasional glimpse of the entrance to Hornsby Hospital in Sydney, it could well have been Doctor in Timbuktu) and the Channel 7 series was plagued by weak scripts.
Robin Nedwell later commented of the Australian series: “I cringe whenever I see it. We had problems with scripts, and I’m sure the experience will haunt me for years to come.”
