12 x 30 minute episodes
The bustle and banter of London’s iconic Billingsgate fish market provided the backdrop for Reg Varney’s first sitcom following his phenomenal success in On the Buses.
In the mid-Seventies, the ‘gate was Europe’s premier fish market: a muddle of boxes and barrows, merchants and white-smocked porters with their fish boxes perched precariously on their heads.
East Ender Varney played porter Reg Furnell, whose misadventures were charted over two series (12 episodes) of cockney knees up comedy featuring wall-to-wall 1970s sitcom dolly birds.
TRIVIA
Six of the twelve episodes are believed to be lost. The surviving six, released on DVD by Network in 2013, are sourced from Reg Varney’s own off-air recordings from 1976.
