Five years after the last Father, Dear Father was made by Thames Television, Patrick Cargill and Noel Dyson went Down Under to star in a new version being made by the Australian 7 Network, titled, appropriately enough, Father, Dear Father In Australia.
One cannot help but smile at the ‘ingenuity’ of the plot – finally shot of his two daughters, Patrick was in Australia for six months to research a new book and had taken Nanny with him (erm . . . why?)
They intended to stay with Patrick’s brother Jeffrey (Ron Fraser), but, upon their arrival in Sydney, Jeffrey announced that he was being transferred to London for six months.
Could, said brother wondered, he leave his two nubile daughters, Liz (Sally Conabere) and Sue (Sigrid Thornton), for Patrick and ‘Nanny’ to look after? Oh how we laughed, cobbers.
Patrick Cargill died in 1996 after being knocked down by a hit-and-run driver in Sydney, Australia.
Matilda ‘Nanny’ Harris
