Daredevil Blue Peter presenter John Noakes travelled around Britain with his Border Collie, Shep, and embarked on a series of challenging outdoor adventure pursuits – everything from caber tossing and the highland fling, to traversing the 250-mile Pennine Way, rowing in the ‘Oxford Bumps’ and competing in the toughest canoe race in Ireland (over ten weirs on the swollen River Liffey) with a spot of hang-gliding, water ski jumping and roof-thatching thrown in for good measure.
Parts of his journey were undertaken in an old car called ‘Nellie’ and onboard Noakes’ own 39-foot ketch, Pleiades.
John Noakes settled in Majorca in 1984. He died on 28 May 2017 at the Son Espases Hospital in Palma. He was 83.
