This six-part BBC2 adaptation of Henry James’ complex novel of 1904 starred Cyril Cusack narrating as Bob Assingham, neatly overcoming the perennial problem of all first episodes, that of establishing the personalities and characters.
Maggie Verver (Jill Townsend) is the daughter of wealthy American widower Adam Verver (Barry Morse) who has devoted his life to her They love Europe and especially England, where they have chosen to live.
Then Maggie falls for Prince Amerigo (Daniel Massey), a penniless Italian aristocrat.
She marries Amerigo, unaware that he has had a mysterious relationship in the past with her great friend Charlotte (Gayle Hunnicutt).
Despite her marriage, Maggie continues to see her father almost as much as before, and it occurs to her that it would be a good thing for him to marry again.
Kathleen Byron, as the match-making Fanny, was appropriately concerned and tactful in trying to ensure that her achievement was not tarnished.
The production values were excellent, and the sets and costumes were gorgeous.
