John St. John (Jack Warden) was a veteran detective with the Robbery/Homicide Division of the LAPD whose talent for solving complex crimes had earned him the nickname “Jigsaw John”. He had the highest record of crime solution and criminal conviction in the department.

Elementary school teacher Maggie Hearn (Pippa Scott) was his girlfriend, and Detective Sam Donner (Alan Feinstein) was his younger partner. Their car code was 4-King-90.

John liked Chinese food for breakfast but had to take pills for his dyspeptic stomach.

The series grew out of a 1975 made-for-television movie called They Only Come Out At Night based on the true story of an LAPD detective’s methodical search for a psychopathic killer preying on older women. The movie also starred Jack Warden as John St. John.
