Joe Forrester (Lloyd Bridges) is a veteran cop who could have had a desk job but has chosen to stay in uniform walking his old beat in the heart of Los Angeles, a neighbourhood he’s been working for years.

It is a tough beat, full of pawn shops, all-night cafes, parking lots and shady characters.

Joe takes a personal interest in the welfare of folks who live on his beat and is always giving someone a friendly pat on the back, but many of the people in the neighbourhood are old-fashioned and appreciate him in an old-fashioned way.

But Joe is no grandfather figure. He has a steady girlfriend called Georgia (Pat Crowley) and their emotional relationship is very much part of the show.

Forrester’s watch commander was played by real-world ex-cop Eddie Egan.

The pilot for the series was an episode of the anthology show Police Story and the series proper premiered on 9 September 1975.
