44 x 30 minute episodes
This ITV drama anthology series was launched in late 1972 as a way of introducing authors new to television writing with standalone 30-minute plays. Episodes were produced by Granada Television, Scottish Television (STV), Southern Television and Westward Television.
Stand-out stories included “1939” (1973), “The Eagle Has Landed” (1973) (pictured) – a wildly inventive satire on the Apollo Space Programme in which two astronauts perform the first ever live variety show from the moon complete with advertising jingles and accompanying television punditry – and “We’re Strangers Here” (1973)
Episodes featured a cavalcade of actors, including Michael Ripper, Fulton Mackay, Peter Vaughan, Beryl Reid, Judy Cornwell, Roy Marsden, Joss Ackland, Barry Evans, Deborah Watling, Laurence Naismith, Jack Warner, Zoë Wanamaker, Moira Redmond, Susan Penhaligon, Anouska Hempel, Jill Gascoine, Nerys Hughes, Ian Hendry, Aubrey Morris, Victor Maddern, Patrick Newell and Philip Madoc.
